[Bookplate for George Short by R. Silvester] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided per pale, charged with a mullet at precise middle chief. The dexter half, gules (red) with an ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts) chief, is charged with a gryphon, rampant. The sinister half, argent (silver), contains a fess, vert (green), charged with three stag's heads, cabossed. The escutcheon is crested by a wreath and a demi-gryphon, with wings displayed and elevated. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. The artist's mark, "Silvester sculp. 27 Strand, London." Is present on the bookplate. R. Silvester was a London engraver. According to Fitcham, his earliest appearance is in the London Directory of 1806. 142. [Bookplate for George R. Alexander] This heraldic bookplate consists of an or (gold) escutcheon with a galley at its centre. A galley is an ancient vessel propelled by oars, and is frequently used in the heraldry of naval officers. Also on the escutcheon are three cross crosslets fitchy sable -- one in dexter chief, one in sinister chief, and one in precise middle base. Atop the escutcheon is a half-visored helm in profile. Within the helm, one can see what appears to be the face of a cat. The helm is topped by a crest wreath and a horse's head, proper, couped and gules (red). From the helm flows extensive or and gules mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the latin motto. 143. [Bookplate for George Paget] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, parted per cross. Quarters one and four are sable (black) and charged with a cross, argent (silver), between four eagles displayed. The cross is charged with five lions passant guardant. Quarters two and three are azure (blue), with a chevron or (gold) between three lion heads, erased, two over one. Above the escutcheon is a closed esquire helmet, positioned en profile, with mantling radiating from it, surrounding theescutcheon. Above the helmet is a straight wreath, charged with a heraldic tyger, rampant. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. 144. [Bookplate for George Meek] In black ink, this bookplate consists of a garter bordure, azure (blue) and buckled. The space within the circular frame is divided quarterly, with a label, argent (silver), at the fess point. The first quadrant, gules (red), is charged with three stirrups, two over one ; the second quadrant, or (gold), is charged with a lion, passant guardant and gules, above two bars, gemels and gules ; the third quadrant, ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), contains two bars, gemels and gules ; and the fourth quadrant, argent, contains a bend coticed, sable, charged with three fish, hauriant (upward facing). The garter is crested by a curved wreath, topped by a lion rampant. The garter contains the Latin motto. 145. [Bookplate for George J. Campbell] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon bearing the arms of the ancient Scottish family Campbell, presented as a Gyronny of eight, or (gold) and sable (black). The escutcheon is bordered in gules (red) with 7 escallopes. The escutcheon contains a canton, also Gyronny of eight, gules and ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts). The crest, atop a curved wreath, is an eagles head, erased. Over the shield is a banner containing the Latin motto. Below the shield are two oak branches tied together by a ribbon. 146. [Bookplate for George Herbert Wailes] This bookplate consists of a combination of heraldic and pictorial elements. At the centre, is an ovular frame containing an image of a nude woman in a crouching position, and holding a flower pot in her open hands. From the pot, stands a single flower. Above the frame is a small escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with a crane. The crest is a dexter helm, itself topped by a straight wreath, and a horseman's spur and strap, accompanied on either side by a pair of wings erect. Behind the crest is a banner containing the Latin motto. 147. [Bookplate for George Harrison] In black ink, an escutcheon, or (gold), with a cross azure (blue), charged with four pheons proper. At the fess point is an inescutcheon, argent (silver), charged with a chevron pupure (purple), between three doves, two over one. Wreath crest with a cubit arm habited grasping an arrow. 148. [Bookplate for George E. Longley by Francis Adams Sc.] Black ink on white paper with cropped corners. The crest features an arm grasping a dagger. The blade of the dagger has pierced the head of a bearded man that resembles a lion head. The arm is atop a crest-wreath. The wreath sits on a flower with a round center and 5 petals. To strips extend out of the flower across the front and back of a ribbon, connecting to the top of the shield. The ribbon extends straight out with curling ends. The motto is printed on the ribbon in black, capitalized, serif font. Shield is ermine with a black bend. Bend charged with three cheetah heads. Underneath the shield, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in elaborate gothic block font. The first letter of each part of the name is outlined with a black border, while the remaining letters are printed in black. Swirling lines and dots embellish the text. Below the name, a location is printed in smaller, sentence case, black serif font. Underneath this text is another swirling line with several dots, to the right of which text is printed in capitalized block serif letters with black outlines. In the bottom left of the bookplate, the creator’s name is printed in small, black, sentence case, serif font. 149. [Bookplate for George de Pafsow] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, azure (blue), charged with a greyhound courant (in motion), running on ground. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath, charged with a greyhound couchant (sitting position). Below the escutcheon is bookplate owner's name. 150. [Bookplate for George de Pafsau] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, azure (blue), charged with a greyhound courant (in motion), running on ground. Below the escutcheon is bookplate owner's name. 151. [Bookplate for George Benson Strutt] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, sable (black), containing a chevron, ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), and charged with three cross crosslets fitchy, or (gold). Above the escutcheon is a straight crest wreath, and a cubit arm habited (vert [green] sleeve and ermine cuff) containing a cross crosslet fitchy, argent (silver), and holding a rolled scroll. Above the crest is a banner containing the Latin motto. 152. [Bookplate for George A. Hanson] In black ink, an escutcheon, azure (blue), with a cross botony, or (gold), between four fleur-de-lis, argent (silver). The escutcheon is crested by a dexter helmet, with the beaver closed and mantling. Atop the helmet is a curved crest wreath with bird perched. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 153. [Bookplate for Geo. Campbell] In black ink. Escutcheon parted per cross. First and fourth quarters, gyrony of eight pieces, argent [white] and sable [black]. Second and third quarters, argent, a ship with three oars, furled sails, and two flags, gules [red]. Supporters, lioncels combatant. Above the escutcheon is a marquess coronet. The crest consists of a straight crest wreath and a boar, couped close. 154. [Bookplate for Francis Marion Smith by Warren Stannard] The "crest" is the profile of a blacksmith from the waist up holding with outstretched arms a hammer and tongs is before an anvil. Below the blacksmith is the text Ex Libris on a ribbon. A laurel wreath acts as supporters for the shield. On the shield, a printing press appears on the dexter side ; a cube with human faces and bold letters appears on the sinister chief ; and an anatomical human heart appears on the middle base. At the base of the shield, and behind it, a burst appears. 155. [Bookplate for Francis Lawson] This heraldic bookplate consists of a chippendale styled escutcheon, argent (silver) parted per pale ; first, argent, with a saltier, azure (blue), the upper part charged with three garbs, the lower a boar's head, and at dexter and sinister an etoile each ; second, argent, depicting a wolf salient, climbing a tree, vert (green), possibly oak. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath, charged with a boar's head and below the escutcheon the name and location of the bookplate's owner. The entire escutcheon and accompanying text are surrounded by elaborate chippendale borders. 156. [Bookplate for Francis Henry Wilkinson] In black, red, blue, green, orange, and gold ink. Escutcheon parted per cross. First and fourth quarter, gules, parted per fess, vair, azure and argent. Three unicorns, passant, two over one. Second quarter, gules, parted per fess, or, with three annulets, azure. Three crosses, patée fitched, or, two over one. Third quarter, gules, a spur, or. A chief, argent, partition line, or, with three cocks, erased, gules. Vizored helm of an esquire or gentleman above the escutcheon, with tasseled mantling. Above the helm is a curved crest wreath with a demi-talbot, sajant, holding in one paw a rose, stalked leaved and seeded. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 157. [Bookplate for Francis Fortescue Knottesford] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon parted per pale. The first pale is parted per quarter. Quarters one and four are azure (blue), a bend engrailed, or (gold), coticed, argent (silver). Quarters two and three are argent, cross engrailed, gules (red), in canton cinquefoil, azure (blue). The second pale is parted per quarter, in quarter one, a barry of eight, argent and vert (green), charged with a gryphon, rampant, segreant. Quarter two is argent, with a chevron, ermine, fimbrated sable (black), with two canons placed two over one around the chevron. Quarter three is argent, with a chevron, sable, charged with a bird displayed. Quarter four is azure charged with a lion rampant. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath charged with a tyger passant atop a peer helmet. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing text. 158. [Bookplate for Fra. Love Beckford] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon quartered per cross, with an escutcheon of pretence. On the first escutcheon, the dexter chief and sinister base quarters are divided themselves per pale, with the dexter being gules (red) and the sinister azure (blue). The quarters contain an argent (silver) chevron, which itself contains three argent eagles, displayed. The quarters also contain three marlets, two over one. The sinister chief and dexter base quarters of the escutcheon are argent with three gules bars. Above the bars are three lion heads, erased. The escutcheon of pretence is divided by an embattled fess. The base is argent and the chief, which contains three bezant (gold roundlets), is sable (black). Atop the shield is a straight crest wreath and a heron's head, erased. In the mouth of the heron is a fish, hauriant. 159. [Bookplate for Foley] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), containing a fess, sable (black) and engrailed, and three cinquefoil, two over one. The escutcheon is within a bordure, sable. The escutcheon is crested by a baron's coronet, on top of which is a straight crest wreath and a lion, rampant, holding a miniture of the same escutcheon. On either side of the central escutcheon are lion supporters, charged with five cinquefoil each. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 160. [Bookplate for Florence Bailey Swift] This elaborate bookplate, in black ink, consists of an escutcheon, or (gold), containing a chevron, vair of argent (silver) and azure (blue), and charged with three stags, springing (or courant) and vert (green), two over one. The escutcheon is surrounded by an elaborate bordure, and topped by a dexter closed helmet. Atop the helmet is a curved crest wreath and an arm embowed, habited, holding four arrows. From either side of the helmet flows elaborate mantling, or and azure.
